Cool songs, strong vocals, greasy lowdown guitar and cool harp!
Joe Filisko „The day will come when you have your own blues to play!“ That´s what Blues veteran Champion Jack Dupree told Greyhound George and his fellow Bielefeld musicians when he and Louisiana Red were living nearby in Hannover in the nineteen seventies. They were visiting Bielefeld quite often to play so the kids could learn a lot. Over the years George has studied the blues in all its forms and reincarnations but he never forgot the Champion´s advice. In his concerts and on record he mostly plays his own material. Greyhound George´s Blues tells stories from everyday life. He lets the people participate in grand emotions and little incidents, but George´s blues is not always low down and sad. He has fun in doing what he does and he lets the people know! George does not restrict himself to copying the old long gone masters of the Blues, but he shows with his interpretations and his own songs that this music is alive and well and can capture an audience. In 2017 he won the German Blues Challenge with Greyhound´s Washboard Band. In 2018 they made it to the finals at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. The year 2020 was good for nothing but writing blues songs, so George had a lot of time to come up with some very personal tunes. These are songs about lockdown, existential fear, overused relationships and party until it all comes down. Musically the album breaks the borders between blues, soul and jazz, between Chicago, Memphis, New Orleans and Bielefeld. The band consists of George´s faithful, tight rhythm section with Wolfgang Lohmann on bass and Detlev Schütte on drums, his old harmonica playing partner Andy Grünert, who also played on the band´s last album „Electrified“.Dieter Kozak plays organ and piano. On some tracks they are supported by a three part horn section, the LOHMANN WONDERBRAS. Bad Temper Joe, a representative of the next generation of blues players, joins in for two songs. |
